Frequently asked questions

How can I customize my welcome message?

Just write settings in the direct message to GreetBot to configure your team's welcome message.

  • Jasmine

    settings

  • GreetBot

Let’s start here. You can type:

Direct to configure your direct message
Channel to configure your channel messages
Greet to see a test greeting (only visible to you)
Disable to stop greeting new members altogether
    Nevermind to quit setup

P.S. Not sure what to do? Say help for more info 😊

Can GreetBot welcome new joiners via direct message?

Sure thing. During the initial setup GreetBot will ask whether you'd like to post a welcome message in one of the existing channels or greet new joiners with a direct message:

  • GreetBot

Yello! This is Greetbot, let's help your team welcome new members, shall we?
Say yes to continue or no if you prefer to do it later.

  • Jasmine

    yes

  • GreetBot

Excellent! How would you like me to welcome new members? You can type:

Direct — to send a direct message
Channel — to post in a private or public channel

Pro tip: direct messages are more suitable for larger communities (less noisy) 💆, whereas public shoutouts work decidedly better in smaller teams (more fun!) 🐣

If you already have GreetBot configured to post channel messages you can go to settings and type direct to start sending direct messages as well.

Can GreetBot post to a different channel?

Yes! Just ask GreetBot for channel and then respond with switch. You will be able to select any other existing channel. Please note GreetBot currently cannot post to groups.

Cool, cool. Here is what I can post to #general when someone joins:

@channel hey everyone give a warm welcome to @new_user_name!
Good to have you here 😊

What would you like me to do? You can type:

Change to write a different message
Switch to use a different channel
Add to set up a new channel message
Disable to stop posting this message
    Nevermind to quit setup

Can GreetBot post to more than one channel?

Yes, you can configure up to three different channels at a time. Start by typing channel and then say add to configure each additional channel. Once you are done GreetBot will list all active channels, like this:

  • Jasmine

    channel

  • GreetBot

Right on! Here are all the channels I am currently posting to:

    #general
    #welcome

You can respond with #channel name listed above to configure each channel individually. You can also type:

Add to set up a new channel
Disable to stop posting all channel messages
    Nevermind to quit setup

PS. Are you an Enterprise customer looking for unlimited channel support? Please get in touch.

Can I see a test greeting?

Totally! GreetBot can post a test channel message or send a test direct welcome message you have set up.

It will be exactly the same greeting new joiners will get and it will be only visible to you.

  • GreetBot

Let’s start here. You can type:

Direct to configure your direct message
    Channel to configure channel messages

Disable to stop greeting new members altogether
    Nevermind to quit setup

Can I use both channel messages and direct messages?

Yes you can! Channel and direct messages work side by side. You can configure both at any time, just write settings in chat with GreetBot.

Can GreetBot post a private message when somebody joins a particular channel?

Not yet, but we are working on an option to make channel messages private ("Only visible to you"). The effect will be that when people join a particular channel GreetBot will post a welcome message only they will see.

Can GreetBot notify me directly when somebody joins my workspace?

GreetBot cannot directly alert you when new team members join your workspace. You can, however, configure a welcome message in one of your default channels to include an @mention of your name. That way you will always get a notification whenever someone joins your workspace.

For example, you could write something like this (where your name is @charlotte):

  • Jasmine

    Joined #general

  • GreetBot

Howdy @jasmine! Welcome to the team! Make yourself at home. If you have any questions please let @charlotte know 👌

Even something short like this could do the trick:

  • Jasmine

    Joined #general

  • GreetBot

Howdy @jasmine! Welcome to the team 👋 (cc: @charlotte)

Just make sure you configure a channel message this way, as opposed to a direct message. You won’t receive a notification if your name is @mentioned in a direct message.

Can I attach a file to my welcome message?

GreetBot can't handle files you upload through Slack. But feel free to include a link in your welcome message to an external file hosting service such as Dropbox or Google Drive.

Who on my team can change GreetBot's messages?

Only team members with admin privileges can access GreetBot's settings.

Can I ask GreetBot for help?

You can type help and GreetBot will respond with a summary of the current setup and list options available to you.

Can I disable GreetBot?

Yes, you can disable channel and direct messages at any time. You just need to ask GreetBot for settings and use the keyword disable to turn everything off.
